Wine Description for Kastanienbusch Riesling GG 2022 by Ökonomierat Rebholz
- Colour & Appearance
- Sparkling, vibrant golden yellow with youthful lustre in the glass – a first hint of the density and character of what is to follow.
- Nose
- Initially closed and introverted – this wine demands patience and above all: air. After sufficient aeration, it unfolds a multi-layered aromatic profile of apple, citrus and juicy vineyard peach, underpinned by mineral notes of earth, smoke, tree bark, wild herbs and white pepper. One can already sense the fireworks that await us with increasing maturity.
- Palate
- Powerful, precise and carried by a vibrant, cutting acidity that sets an elegant counterpoint to the spicy and earthy elements. The texture is dense without feeling heavy – a Riesling that unites depth and freshness in remarkable balance.
- Finish
- Long, saline-mineral and sustained. The finish resonates with fine spice and citrus-fresh vibrancy – a testament to the extraordinary terroir. With each passing day after opening, it gains in elegance and complexity.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Birkweiler Kastanienbusch ranks among the great vineyard sites of the Palatinate. Rebholz manages the original parcel in the uppermost section – at 280 to 320 metres elevation the highest-altitude GG vineyard in the Palatinate. The soils of 280 million-year-old Rotliegend sandstone – angular deposits of granite, slate and melaphyre with high iron content – lend the wine its unmistakable mineral depth and warmth.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Selective hand-harvesting in multiple passes, 24-hour skin contact, gentle pressing and natural sedimentation. Fermentation in stainless steel, five months ageing on full lees – a purist approach that allows the terroir to speak unfiltered. Remarkable 12.5% vol. proves: power and expression need no alcohol as a crutch.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Ideal with grilled salmon on saffron linguine as well as peach tart with cream cheese and pine nuts. For those preferring something more savoury, a pumpkin with lamb and couscous filling makes an appealing partner for the spicy side of this Riesling.
- Special Notes
- Be sure to open and decant early if you wish to enjoy it whilst young. Those with patience will be rewarded with a wine that has the potential to develop over many years into an extraordinary Palatinate Riesling.
