Wine description for Mayschosser Spätburgunder 2023 by Bertram-Baltes
Julia Bertram and Benedikt Baltes are among Germany’s most exciting winemaking couples – and this Mayschosser is proof of that. It comes from parcels once planted by Benedikt’s father, with vines averaging 15 years of age. A wine that demonstrates: lightness is not a weakness, but a statement of intent.
- Colour & appearance
- Transparent ruby red – bright and inviting, entirely in the style of the elegant Ahr Pinot Noirs.
- Nose
- The wine needs air – a carafe is a good idea at this stage. Initially, it shows a pronounced, distinctly reductive note. Behind this lie rose and violet, candied wild strawberries and raspberries, along with hints of liquorice and cinnamon.
- Palate
- At 11.0% abv, it is remarkably light yet by no means thin: fresh, with a touch of creaminess, and a hint of extract sweetness and vanilla within its juicy red and partly dark fruit. The tannins are silky with fine grip – making this an exceedingly drinkable wine.
- Finish
- Fresh and juicy, with a spicy aftertaste of cinnamon and red berries. A finish that invites you to pour another glass.
- Terroir & origin
- Mayschoß on the Ahr: very stony to slightly loamy weathered slate soils shape the wine. The steep slopes demand complete manual labour; cool nights from the Ahr valley preserve freshness, whilst the slate stores the daytime heat.
- Grape variety & vinification
- Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), dry. The harvested grapes are meticulously sorted, then spontaneously fermented in open stainless steel tanks and matured in used Stück and Halbstück casks – in a deliberately reductive style, without chaptalisation, over two winters in the cellar. The only addition: minimal sulphur before bottling.
- Food recommendations
- A versatile everyday wine: pan-fried duck breast with cherry jus, wild mushroom ragout with bread dumplings, grilled salmon fillet or mildly aged hard cheese – the light, fresh style pairs well with many dishes.
- Special features
- A village wine from inherited family parcels – and a statement: picked earlier, naturally light, yet still possessing depth. It comes from the first vintage following the reconstruction of the estate, which was nearly destroyed by the 2021 Ahr floods. One tastes not only Pinot Noir finesse, but also resilience.
